My experience with conversion optimization

Up until now, I knew very little about my users’ “purchasing pathway” (when/how they make their purchases). I added some tracking software that helps me determine how the users gets to the desired action of making a purchase. The website I tested sells an online digital product that requires a user account to make a purchase. What I immediately noticed was that nearly 90% of buyers made their purchase within the first 4 minutes of visiting and within the first 45 seconds of logging in.
Wow. 45 seconds. This obviously shows that my buyers have a very distinct idea of what they want to do the entire time they are on my website.
What does this mean for me? Evidently, I should try to sell the product as soon after the user logs-in as possible.
At this point, the user would login an redirect immediately to the store which includes several different products of varying price and topic. I decided to try a more direct approach where the user would be redirected to a landing page that promoted only one product, very simply. Here is what I used, generalized for any purpose

You can have XYZ in just a few easy steps!
Then a call to action button to attract attention and get the customer moving along the purchase pathway

Don’t forget to keep all of your statements true. Do not make empty promises. My product is digital and the user receives it immediately after purchase, therefore my example above is a real promise. I even went as far to create each step to say “Step 1″, “Step 2″, etc. Also, create an exit for your user on that page
By cutting down the user’s available choice from several products in the store to only one product on the landing page, I have eliminated all the thinking required. By making the process simple, I notice a 250% increase in conversions directly after user log-in. 98% of all first time buyers use my landing page and subsequent steps to make their first purchase. Repeat buyers are a little more confident and explore the store.
What I learned:

Make the purchase pathway easy and painless first. Then go beyond that and make the purchase pathway intersect with the customers normal pathway. I find that the best for me was to redirect the user to that page after login.
More choice does not equal more sales. In fact, less choice does equal more sales. By creating too much choice, you make the user think too long about what they want (or if they want it. Yikes!).
Many buyers coming to my website already have a very good idea of what they want, but not always how to get it. This is where making the purchase pathway easy and making it intersect with the normal pathway is a great idea.
